I came off of a regular monthly mentoring call I lead for CTI yesterday and it struck me.

Coaches love, love, love to coach, ‘well obviously’ you might be saying but really, this is more than just a nice thing to do or a career side-step.

This is vocation. A calling.

But they all seem to struggle with significant, pivotal, blind spots. Frequently on the group calls I’ll have people ask me the following:

  • ‘How do I go about getting clients?’

  • ‘How do I figure out my niche and do I need one?’

  • ‘Where do I even start to build my business? It’s hard to know where to begin’

  • ‘How do I differentiate myself? It feels like everybody is a coach these days’

Coaches are so enthusiastic, ready to lead change AND they have significant blind spots that prevent them from moving forwards. They are caught in an unpleasant tension that demands some answers.

These coaches are at the stage in their ‘hero’s journey’ known as:

The call to adventure and necessary change”.

They teeter on the very edge of the cliff and absolutely can’t go back to the old world from where they came, the yearning to move onwards is too great.

What eases their distress? What will have them trust themselves to lean forwards and swan-dive into the great void beneath? Well, two things…

Knowledge and know-how.

1. Knowledge that in fact, people have walked this path before, they too had to leap into the unknown and made it, they are now thriving coaches.

To know that this is doable is an enormous relief and…

2. Know-how. What’s the route that I should take? How can I get there? What are the steps involved? What should I watch out for?

In the 11 years that I have been a coach, I have encountered all manner of challenges, potholes and trials to setting up and successfully running a practice. Many of these, my clients have brought to our sessions, many are from my own experience as I’ve grown and established my business.

I think by now I’ve got a pretty good map of the territory and I’d love to share the outline of that with you now.

The 6 fail-safe stages to building a rocking coaching practice:

  1. Where are you drawn to be in service and with who? What plight can you not ignore? Why does it matter? Pay close attention to your own life journey, what did you endure and overcome?

  2. Thoroughly validate what you think you know about this tribe, with this tribe. Interview them, inhabit their world-view absorb their language. Articulate their difficulties with them until their eyes light up and they say ‘Yes! You are describing my plight exactly, it’s like this is written about me!’

  3. Do your self-work get coached, get therapy around confidence and visibility, own the fact that you are a leader for change, make your mission be about them, not about looking good.

  4. Structure your practice, define your boundaries, build your website, set your prices, create your packages and experiences - create these so that the prospect of leading any one of them, fills you with excitement and energises you and specifically addresses and works with your tribes pains.

  5. Find a common platform where you can become visible to your tribe effectively, one you’ll enjoy using frequently, take a leadership stance and share what you know, ease some of their pain with your words and ideas and consciously invite your tribe in to connect with you.

  6. Meet a larger audience with the work they hunger for. When you’ve been in the field a while and you’ve honed your mission to a stage where you utterly own your impact and love the work, upscale and create group programs, workshops and / or retreats. Meet a larger audience with the transformation they crave.

This formula works, I want you to know that.

I’m living it and I’ve helped many coaches spiral up and out of the shadows using this methodology. I share this with you In the hope that it’ll ease your anxiety if you’re a stage where you need to find courage.
